This Brave New World

Genre: Hard Rock / Hardcore

This band seems to have been very short-lived, but hopefully someone can offer more information. Their only release archived so far, a self-titled EP, is interesting because of the packaging and extra material. A rarity for Roanoke bands, it included a bonus DVD with two full music videos, and a booklet with all song lyrics. Although they were off to a good start, it seems like they mysteriously vanished. I have uploaded the full DVD to Youtube, which you can watch below.

Letters of December

Genre: Hard Rock

Despite being apparently quite young at the time it was founded, this band actually created their own website (last updated in 2007) using Freewebs—a rarity in the "Myspace era." Their website features some pretty amusing drawings using the band name. It apparently had a forum as well, which is no longer in existence as of this writing. As for the actual music, it's a shame that it wasn't better recorded, as it seems to be thoughtfully crafted. The singer is better than expected—I would like to know if he went on to another project. Does anyone know?

Apollo 11

There is nearly no information in the 1-sided liner notes, other than the names of the people that created the album—Doug Coulter and John Bain—and that it was released by a "C-Lab Records." I believe John Bain went on to play guitar in a band called Maximum Exposure, of which I have little information about.

The music itself moves from hard rock (played with atypical guitar arrangements) to jazz, to psychedelic/progressive rock jams, and finally touches on a bit of metal in the last track, of which most of the accompanying vocals are vomiting noises. The singer, if it's the same person throughout the album, has quite a range, and showcases his interesting voice quite well across these 5 songs.

Genre: Hard Rock / Jazz / Prog Rock

Navel

I think these guys might actually have been based in Charlottesville, but I'm not sure. It was too good of a find to not include.

Genre: Hard Rock / Nu-metal
